“The 101 Things Every Fan Must Experience Before They Die”

ESPN’s Jim Caple has posted his list of “The 101 Things Every Fan Must Experience Before They Die.”
Here’s how I stand on his list. I have been lucky enough to attend:
#4: The World Series (1993 @ the Vet)
#5: NCAA subregional [he means the 1st and 2nd rounds] (2006 @ Wachovia Center)
#6: Spring training (Phillies at Jack Russell, Royals at Baseball City, Braves at Disney)
#7: NFL conference championship game (2003 @ the Vet, 2004 and 2005 @ LFF)
#9: Wimbledon (1998)
#16: [Baseball] HoF Induction (1991 & 1995)
#23: Football game at Notre Dame (2006)
#28: US Open golf (2007 practice round @ Oakmont)
#30: US Open tennis (1999)
#35: MLB Opening Day (many times)
#43: MLB All-Star Game (1993 @ San Diego, 1996 @ the Vet)
#62: Midnight Madness (2003-2006 @ Gtown)
#64: Camp out for tickets (March 2007)
#88: Monday Night Football (Sept 8, 2003-Eagles vs. Bucs @ LFF)

Caple goes on to list his “10 Events to Avoid.” I have attended 3 of these events:
#1: Super Bowl (XXXIX Jacksonville-Eagles vs. Pats)
#2: NFL exhibition games (many)
#9: Wing Bowl

Attending 14 of his 101 in my 21 years shows how lucky I am. I think that its about 16 events, because he didn’t include the Super Bowl or the Final Four, both of which I’d include in my list.

A great inside account of the Celtic’s draft process from ESPN’s Andy Katz. Katz reports that Green is in the mix to be taken at #5, but Yi was the favorite as of Monday night. Come on Sixers, get Jeff Green.

Hoyas vs. Hartford Pre-game Media Coverage

A round-up of articles:

Mike Wise (Wash. Post): Ewing-Thompson: The Sequel

A great column. Good stories about Pops, Ewing Sr (who the article says will be in the house for the game), PE2 and JTIII. A must-read. Well done Mr. Wise (but you still can’t shoot around during NCAA Tourney practice days. haha)

Camille Powell (Wash. Post): Questions in Hoyas’ Back Court

Camille examines the supposed backcourt weakness. We shall see.

Wash. Times (I assume Barker Davis but it isn’t attributed to an author): Guarded optimism
A season preview. Another examination of the guard situation. One take-away quote: ” ‘I don’t think Georgetown has major backcourt issues, because you have to defend Jeff Green as a guard,’ Marquette coach Tom Crean said of Georgetown’s perceived backcourt weakness.” We also learn that Jeff Green concentrated on working on guard skills in Kenner. Interesting.

Enjoy, and I hope that Hartford is ready for the Hoyas to bring the pain.

Washington Post’s Georgetown Season Preview

Concluding it’s week-long college basketball preview, the Post published its Georgetown season preview today. Camille did a nice job. Nothing very new.

Observations and notes:

  • If they don’t make the tourney this year it would be a great disappointment
  • I’ve heard JTIII say that he doesn’t focus on intermediate goals (Elite 8, Final 4, etc.) but only focuses on winning the national championship.

“You look around this league, and making the Big East tournament is still, you have a checklist and it’s still number one,” Thompson said.

  • JTIII has a great respect for the BET and thinks that each team should make it (although logistics make that near impossible). I think that’s partially because he feared not making it his first year.
  • If Crawford is such the “heart and soul” why hasn’t he played more? He did greatly improve his 3 point stroke this summer.
  • Green and Crawford (the captains) were vocal in practice during drills.
  • Nice to have the environment where Green can tutor Summers and Roy can teach Vernon. I’m sure thats like it used to be with Pops, but there hasn’t been that level of talent while I’ve been on the Hilltop.
  • Thinking back to the Florida game hurts. During his speech before the season, JTIII refused to answer if he thought the Hoyas would’ve won the National Championship if they had beat Florida. Roy was sitting in the row behind me, and unprompted gave a big thumbs up. I like that level of confidence, but that hurts to think about.
  • I like Ewing saying that he wants to win more championships than his dad. Let’s hope he can contribute as much as some think.

Season starts in 35 hours from the time I finish writing this. Those hours can’t pass quick enough.

Hoops Weiss on the Hoyas

A great article about the Hoyas from the NY Daily News’ Hoops Weiss.

“Once again, Georgetown’s all the rage”

Well done Camille, well done.

It starts tomorrow.

Big Roy’s back for more (and the chip)

Items in this article from the Washington Times:

  • Roy lost 25 lbs of fat this summer
  • He thinks he progressed as much as he did last summer
  • Lonny Baxter said “I know it’s just a summer league, but the big fella can ball.”
  • JTIII: “He’s 7-2 with great hands, great attitude and great aptitude. That’s puts him in pretty select group. Roy’s very special, maybe most of all because he knows he still has a long way to go. That’s why you know he’s going to get there.”
  • JTIII also acknowledges that his staff had to teach Roy “how to run.” That’s a VERY true statement.

ROY’S SHOW STOPPING QUOTE: “I’m dedicating the next two years of my life to getting another national championship banner hanging in McDonough.”

Midnight madness is in 3 days. Can you feel it. The Paranoia is coming.

Chris Wright commits to Hoyas

The Hoyas got a verbal committment from the #6 PG (according to Scout.com).  Big time.
